Course Description

IN PERSON: Did you know that Triangle continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) have waitlists that span from four to 15 years? With the influx of retired people into the Triangle, the demand for CCRC spots has grown, leading to long wait times. Likewise, competition to hire competent in-home care for those who choose to age in place is fierce. Through expert speakers and class lectures, we will explore options for continued independence as aging progresses and life-care needs change. We'll consider the suitability of your home and your community for aging in place, and various options for home care services. Finally, we'll visit several CCRCs to learn about the services they provide, their contract models, their entrance and monthly fees, and the nature of their waiting lists. Our focus will be on aging in place and retirement communities. | Lecture + Q&A.

Max enrollment: 25.

Location: Judea Reform Congregation, 1933 W. Cornwallis Rd, Durham NC 27705

    • Course 2: 4099-003 (Lectures Only): 4 weeks of in-person classroom lectures focusing on options for continued independence and aging in place.
    • Tip: You are welcome to sign up for both waitlists to increase your chances of being selected!
  2. Join the Waitlist (Aug 12–24): Waitlists open on Wednesday, August 12, at 9:00 a.m. ET. Simply add your preferred section(s) to your waitlist through the student portal.
  3. Lottery Drawings & Acceptance:
    • Course 1 Draw (Tuesday, Aug 25): The Course 1 waitlist will be randomized, and the first 25 members drawn will receive an email invitation to enroll. Selected members will have 48 hours to accept and complete their registration.
    • Course 2 Draw (Friday, Aug 28): The Course 2 lottery will run after the Course 1 acceptance window closes. If you accept an offer for Course 1, you will automatically be removed from Section 2 to give other members an opportunity to attend.

What If You Aren't Selected?

If you are not drawn during the initial lotteries, you will remain on the waitlist. If a registered spot opens up later in the term, it will be offered to the next member on the list. You can easily manage your waitlist status at any time in your student portal under "My Enrollment History".
