Course Description

ONLINE: This discussion-based course invites students to develop a richer understanding of the broad scope of artistic activity we call “photography.” Photographers and collectors will come together to talk about their personal libraries, with a focus on what makes a photograph compelling. By listening, looking and testing out ideas, students will grow their vocabulary for "seeing" photographs and articulating their reactions. Questions for consideration: What is it about an artist’s work that makes it special? Why do we want to return to these images? What are the aesthetic and technical ideas that give a photograph strength? Participants will engage with the instructor and guest speakers who will present the work of such artists as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Burke Uzzle, Vivian Maier, Diane Arbus and Richard Avedon. | Facilitated discussion.

Max enrollment: 24.
