IN PERSON: Dinosaurs were incredible—almost impossible—creatures that win our attention with their size and spikes. But they weren’t the only creatures stomping around for the 185 million years of the Mesozoic era. The ancestors of flowering plants, primates, and crocodiles evolved and diversified, while Pangea fragmented into our modern continents, and ecosystems became more complex. In this class, we will explore the world of the dinosaurs, learning how interwoven evolutionary journeys set the stage for our modern world. We will explore how flowers learned to bloom and birds learned to fly. By the end of the course, students will have a fuller understanding of deep time and the tools used by scientists to explore the distant past. Students will understand the current state of dinosaur science. Finally, students will appreciate how the ecosystems that fueled the evolution of giant reptiles and fuzzy mammals shaped our own backyards. | Lecture + Q&A.
