Course Description

What does it take to create your own universe? What makes a story genuinely fantastic? Every engaging source of entertainment starts with establishing the elements of the universe the creator chooses to build in, crafting a compelling storyline and relatable characters within it. Learn these creative writing components to develop and create speculative fiction.

Learn what elements make up the fictional worlds we love to get lost in–be they in print, audio, or film. Discover what it is like to work amongst like-minded young authors interested in further developing and honing their craft. Design well-rounded characters and settings.

Work within the fantasy-like environment of Duke’s Gothic-style West Campus and sharpen your skills in our historical libraries. Collaborate with fellow world-builders and dreamers to bring the world of your imagination to life. Acquire the ability to evaluate what aspects of speculative fiction resonate with readers the most. Master the writing techniques fantasy authors use to take readers to alternate realities.
