Course Description

Why do engineering interventions often fail? One reason could be the design itself has flaws that need to be addressed. However, the reason could be that the design doesn't have the end user in mind. Human-centered design (HCD) is a new approach to the traditional engineering process involving three phases: hear, create, deliver.

Explore how HCD thinking can be used to address challenges and an engineering intervention can be more effectively implemented. How can we improve the engineering design process to address points of failure?

Working on a design team with peers, you will look at all possible designs (and associated shortcomings) in the beginning stages of development of a prototype. Then, you will tackle a specific element to address points of failure – keeping in mind the intended purpose and the end user. Develop the skills, knowledge and mindset necessary to collaborate with community partners to address challenges through the HCD process and discover how you can apply engineering solutions to solve challenges.
