IN PERSON: This six-week course invites OLLI members to explore the complex factors shaping children's literacy in Durham. Through lectures, facilitated discussions, and guest speakers, participants will examine how poverty, language background, trauma, race, and access to opportunity intersect with reading outcomes, and observe evidence-based tutoring in action. Designed for lifelong learners interested in educational equity, the course offers both intellectual depth and practical insight. Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of Durham's literacy landscape and the confidence to engage meaningfully in their community, whether through year-long one-on-one tutoring or more informal roles with organizations such as Book Harvest, Student U, and Iglesia Emanuel. | Facilitated discussion.
