IN PERSON: This discussion-based course is designed to focus on the history of Indigenous people, free people of color, and enslaved people living within the Eno River valley in North Carolina's Orange and Durham counties. We will review the history of North Carolina beginning around 1580. This course will primarily focus on the experiences of the instructor's family as passed down through oral history as well as some first-person accounts. Students will have the opportunity to see Indigenous burial sites, a maroon cemetery, and a slave cemetery. Students will learn to distinguish each type of site. Students will learn the composition of maroon communities and their locations in North Carolina. We will engage in a hands-on beading project to understand the meaning of and spirituality connected to Indigenous beading. | Facilitated discussion, Active Skill Learning.
