IN PERSON: American first ladies' accomplishments are often remembered in the shadow of the presidents' achievements, yet many have made lasting contributions to the presidency and to American life. Dolley Madison helped define the public and social role of the first lady; Frances Folsom Cleveland promoted early childhood education; and Betty Ford transformed the public conversation about breast cancer. These are just a few examples of their enduring impact. This course examines 12 first ladies whose influence continues to shape American society, exploring the historical context of each woman’s time in the White House, as well as her background, education, and contributions.
