IN PERSON: Discover the lively world of commedia dell’arte, the improvised Italian theater of the 1500s. Far from being formal or stuffy, this type of popular street theater featured bold stock characters, physical comedy, and stories that gleefully poked fun at everyone. Think of it as the “South Park” of its time. In this course, we will explore how commedia worked, the roles and personalities of its famous characters, and the typical plots that shaped its comic improvisations. We’ll also look at how this style revolutionized theater and why its exaggerated characters remain such vivid caricatures of familiar people. The instructor will demonstrate her interpretations of the characters’ personalities, voices, and movements. Participants who wish to can try them out as well, experimenting with short scenes in class. Expect a playful atmosphere, acting experience is not required. | Active Skill Learning.
