IN PERSON: This course examines six core principles of the current U.S. criminal justice system, questioning their effectiveness and exploring their social and financial costs. Participants will consider how these practices developed, why they persist, and what alternatives might look like. The course includes listening to the voices of those harmed by the current systems, and introduces a reimagined approach called “liberation justice” that offers forward-thinking ideas for responding to crime in ways that better serve victims, those who cause harm, and society. Through lectures, PowerPoint slides, handouts, and interactive discussions, students will also explore the economic impact of the prison system, including its costs at both the societal and household levels. | Lecture + Q&A, Facilitated discussion.
