ONLINE: North Carolina is renowned for its high biological diversity, driven by a unique climate and a topography that spans from the mountains to the sea. This course will explore the natural history of North Carolina, covering its geology, the evolution of life here, its modern-day organisms, and its natural resources. We'll discuss the importance of natural history to both science and society, and then move on to a broad overview of the dynamic geologic foundations that allow our planet to support life. We’ll briefly cover the history of life on Earth and the evolution of North America. Then we'll dive into an exploration of North Carolina's three physiographic regions: the Blue Ridge, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain. We’ll finish the course by learning how to use what we've covered to interpret the environment around us in our own backyards and beyond.
