ONLINE: This 10-week course explores the artistry, careers, and lasting influence of major violinists of the 20th century, including Jascha Heifetz, Isaac Stern, Itzhak Perlman, Fritz Kreisler, Nathan Milstein, David Oistrakh, and Yehudi Menuhin. Through guided listening, video and audio recordings, discussion, and occasional live demonstrations, we will examine how different schools of playing evolved and how individual voices shaped the instrument’s modern identity. Students will learn to recognize distinct interpretive styles, as well as the cultural and historical forces surrounding each artist. We will consider how recording technology influenced performance practice and public perceptions of violinists across generations. No musical background is required. The course is designed to deepen participants' listening skills, broaden their historical understanding, and foster in them a richer appreciation for the violin’s expressive possibilities through some of its most iconic interpreters. | Lecture + Q&A, Facilitated discussion.
