IN PERSON: This course will examine the history of the concept of race from the late 18th century to the end of the 19th century. We will learn how this concept, which was initially considered vague and even dubious, gradually acquired the status of a natural fact and a legitimate object of scientific investigation, and how the concept became enmeshed in some of the most consequential philosophical, scientific, political, and moral debates of the day. We will also see how, at the end of the 19th century, the most respected scientists in Europe came to believe that race was a phantasm and could not be discovered by science. Each class will focus on one key debate and a few central figures, with the instructor outlining the issues before class discussion.
