Course Description

IN PERSON: This course will survey the diverse range of global art produced throughout the 20th century and into the 21st century through the lens of social, political and economic conditions. An emphasis will be placed on the global flow of art styles and techniques as a result of interconnected artistic networks formed by the movement and displacement of artists. We will examine the major multidisciplinary artistic approaches that developed during the second half of the 20th century, and identify the similarities and differences between art making of the past several decades and that of the previous decades. In addition to weekly lectures and discussion, this course also includes two trips to the Nasher Museum of Art to study works of art that exemplify the different styles and techniques of the art discussed in class. Readings will include a selection of articles and texts from "The History of Art: A Global View" (details below). | Lecture + Q&A, Facilitated discussion.
