IN PERSON: What makes a documentary powerful? In this course, we’ll explore five culturally significant films to uncover the essential elements of effective nonfiction storytelling. Through screenings and alternating discussion weeks, we’ll examine how each film succeeds in areas such as subject matter, authenticity, emotional impact, narrative structure and audience resonance. Films to be discussed are "To Be and To Have" (2002), "Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould" (2009), "My Name Is Salt" (2013), "I Am Not Your Negro" (2016) and "The Silence of Others" (2018).
