IN PERSON: North Carolina has long been a hotbed for innovative rock music. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Chapel Hill rose to national prominence as a center for alternative rock, rivaling even Athens, Georgia, home of R.E.M. and The B-52s. Soon, Winston-Salem, Raleigh, Durham and Charlotte added their own voices to the scene, driven by vibrant college communities and a dynamic youth culture. This course explores standout acts from across the decades, from the raw energy of Flat Duo Jets and the smart pop of The dB’s to the chart success of Ben Folds Five. We’ll also look at newer voices like Durham’s Delta Rae and the prolific Mountain Goats. Along the way, you’ll discover both celebrated and lesser-known North Carolina artists who’ve shaped the sound and spirit of rock. Expect plenty of surprises, new favorites and a deeper appreciation for our state’s rich musical legacy. | Lecture + Q&A.
