Section Notes

This tour tells the story of the civil rights movement in Durham. This exciting tour focuses on many of the sites in downtown Durham that were important during the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s, including the Durham County Courthouse, the Durham Arts Council (the former site of Durham High School and City Hall), and the Kress and Woolworth buildings, sites of sit-in protests. Learn about the contributions of ordinary Durham residents to the struggle for equality, as well as local leaders like Floyd McKissick and national leaders, such as Martin Luther King, Jr., who brought America’s attention to the campaign for civil rights in the Bull City.

It is highly recommended to wear closed-toed shoes, preferably a sneaker/running shoe, for the most comfortable walk. This tour will be in December, so we highly recommend a jacket and layered clothing to navigate the unpredictable NC weather.

The tour is roughly .9 of a mile of total walking. Tour leaders can give recommendations for places for bathroom breaks if necessary. The tour takes place in Downtown Durham, and it is mostly on flat ground. There will be some stops that require crossing the road.

Meeting Spot: Major the Bull statue in the CCB Plaza in Downtown Durham

Parking: Street parking available in the Downtown area, recommend parking at the Chapel Hill St parking garage (326 E Chapel Hill Street, Durham, NC 27701) for guaranteed parking which is about a 3 minute walk from the CCB Plaza.
