IN PERSON: This course requires no prior musical experience and introduces students to the music and historical context of influential female composers who are increasingly gaining the recognition they deserve. Composers from every major period of Western classical music will be featured, including Hildegard of Bingen, Clara Schumann, Fanny Mendelssohn, and Florence Price. Each class combines some musical and historical background with guided, interactive listening to representative works. Through discussion and shared reflection, students will explore the distinguishing characteristics of different eras and composers, as well as of major musical forms such as the concerto and symphony. Margaret Maytan is passionate about classical music and has an extensive background in studying, teaching, and performing. She holds a combined B.A. in music and M.A. in musicology; has lectured in music history at the high school and university levels; has trained and has experience in guiding learning in small group settings; has performance experience both professionally and at an amateur level in voice, piano, and viola. Margaret is a graduate of a four-year Duke medical specialty residency.
