IN PERSON: This course explores how photographers use images to communicate the character, spirit, and essence of a community. Through a combination of presentation and discussion, the first three classes will examine the work of a range of documentary photographers and the different visual approaches they use to convey a sense of place and belonging. Optional photo assignments in weeks two and three will give students the opportunity to share their own photographs that capture the feel or spirit of a community they live in or have visited. You do not need to be a photographer to take this class; just someone who wants to talk about photography. In the fourth and final class, participants will be invited to bring a book (or books) from their home or the library that has helped them discover or better understand a community close to home or far away. | Facilitated discussion.
