ONLINE: This course explores the songs and stories of the great composers who shaped American musical comedy for the stage and screen. Through video and audio clips from Broadway, film, and television, participants will examine the lives, careers, successes, missteps, and enduring influence of these celebrated songwriters, along with a bit of lighthearted behind-the-scenes lore. Featured composers include Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, and John Kander and Fred Ebb. Together, we will consider what made each composer’s voice distinctive and why their music continues to resonate with audiences today.
