IN PERSON: Do you remember what it was like to bring home a brand-new record album, extract the disc within its sleeve, and carefully place it on a turntable before setting it in motion and waiting for the stylus to drop with restless anticipation? With the advent of streaming, the concept of a record album as an art form has seemingly lost its raison d’etre. Is there still an audience for the record album? In this course, we will listen to some of the greatest albums of the last 75 years and reflect on what about them creates a whole greater than the sum of its parts. Each week the instructor will choose two of the albums he considers the best and share them during class. Genres will include folk, jazz, soft rock, hard rock, blues, and hard to define. Most but not all were released between 1965 and 1975. The course will focus on active listening (there will be few if any visuals) with discussion and commentary as we turn the virtual record albums over from side one to side two. | Lecture + Q&A, Facilitated discussion.
