IN PERSON: This course explores 34 lesser-known rock artists who made strong—sometimes outstanding—recordings but never achieved widespread recognition. Some are contemporary, while others date back to the 1970s, offering a wide range of styles and eras to discover. Five sessions are organized geographically, highlighting artists from Canada, Australia, Scandinavia, and Western Europe (two sessions). Four additional sessions focus on themes: U.S. bands with strong regional identities, folk rock and Americana bands, punk and garage rock bands, and under-appreciated female artists. The course concludes with a “grab bag” session featuring six additional artists. Before each class, participants will receive links to interviews with the featured artists and a short playlist (four to six songs) to preview to add context to our discussions.
