Course Description

ONLINE: This course offers an inside look at the art of choreography, exploring how choreographers shape movement to express narrative, emotion, abstract ideas, or formal design. We will consider the skills choreographers use, the choices they make about movement, and the many sources of inspiration that spark their new work. We will begin by examining fundamental elements of movement—effort, space, time, and flow—along with concepts such as phrasing and momentum. From there, we will explore how choreographers draw inspiration from music, poetry, literature, personal experience, and current events, and how these influences shape the relationship between movement and meaning. Through PowerPoint presentations and video clips, the class will analyze a range of choreographic examples. Participants will develop a sharper eye for observing, understanding, and discussing choreography. | Lecture + Q&A.
