Course Description

IN PERSON: Learn how to evaluate wine like a professional! This course explores the art and science of deductive tasting, a systematic approach used by sommeliers to determine a wine's identity using the senses. We will demystify the classic "grid" method of evaluation, learning to look, smell, and taste critically to break down a wine’s structural components (acid, tannin, alcohol, and body) and identify key grape varieties and regions. This course is taught through engaging, interactive lectures paired with guided, step-by-step structural tastings. You will learn to isolate specific aromas, recognize technical flaws, understand how climate influences a wine’s profile, and confidently articulate what is in your glass. This course is perfect for wine enthusiasts eager to move beyond "I like this" to understanding why they like it. Students will leave with a practical framework to use to confidently navigate any wine list or retail aisle. | Facilitated discussion, Active Skill Learning.
