Course Description

IN PERSON: In this five-week course, students create four small, hand-sewn quilts that are stretched over canvas to become unique textile artworks. Using improvisational piecing, students will explore patchwork, applique, and foundation piecing while learning how to construct and finish small quilts by hand. Each week, the instructor will introduce new techniques and skills while providing guidance on color, fabric selection, and improvisational design. The course offers plenty of room for experimentation and personal expression. By the end of the course, students will have the skills to hand-sew a small quilt and stretch it onto canvas as a finished piece of art. This course is open to all experience levels, from beginners to those with needlework experience. Please bring a good pair of fabric-only scissors to class. | Active Skill Learning.

Required supplies/fee:

Students will purchase materials from the instructor and/or independently for a total estimated cost of $40.

Provided by the instructor: Each student will purchase a kit on the first day of class for an estimated fee of $35 paid to the instructor (cash, check, or Venmo).

This kit will include almost everything you will need for the class, such as canvases, needles, batting, and thread. Provided by the student: Each student needs to bring their own good quality fabric only scissors.

Since we are making small quilts, having access to lots of fabric choices, patterns and colors, will make it a richer and more fun experience. Please bring in fabric scraps that will be shared as a class. I prefer working with natural materials, such as cotton and linen, but some random manmade fabrics can be great in these small quilts. If you do not have fabric, I personally love to use old clothes in my own work. If it has sentimental value, even better, though you do not have to share anything you do not want to share. I will bring in a large selection of scraps too, so there will be plenty of choices. In this way everyone can mix and match fabrics.*
